Information technology (IT) refers to the management and use of information using computer-based tools. It includes acquiring, processing, storing, and distributing information. Most commonly it is a term used to refer to business applications of computer technology, rather than scientific applications. The term is used broadly in business to refer to anything that ties into the use of computers.

Mostly businesses today create data that can be stored and processed on computers. In some cases the data must be input to computers using devices such as keyboards and scanners. In other cases the data might be created electronically and automatically stored in computers.

Small businesses generally need to purchase software packages, and may need to contract with IT businesses that provide services such as hosting, marketing web sites and maintaining networks. However, larger companies can consider having their own IT staffs to develop software, and otherwise handle IT needs in-house. For instance, businesses working with the federal government are likely to need to comply with requirements relating to making information accessible.

The constant upgrade in information technology, along with increasing global competition, is adding difficulty and hesitation of several orders of scale to the business and trade. One of the most widely discussed areas in recent business literature is that of new organizational network structures that hold survival and growth in an environment of growing complexity.

Effective implementation of information technology would decrease liability by reducing the cost of expected failures and increase flexibility by reducing the cost of adjustment. The businesses reaction to the environment remains to be the vital determinant for its effectiveness. The capabilities and flexibilities of computer-communication systems make them gradually more appropriate to businesses by being able to respond to any specific information or communication requirement.

Information Technology is having impact on all trade industries and businesses, in service as well as in manufacturing. It is affecting workers at all levels of organizations, from the executives to middle management and clerks. Information technology is increasingly becoming a basic factor of all types of technologies such as craft, engineering, routine, and non-routine.

The advances in Information Technology would result in remarkable decline in the costs of synchronization that would lead to new, concentrated business structures. It enables the business to respond to the new and urgent competitive forces by providing effective management of interdependence.

In the near future businesses would be facing a lack and a redundancy of information called information glut. To solve the information-glut companies will need to introduce methods for selective thinning out of information. Improvements in telecommunications will make it easier to control business units dispersed over different parts of the world. Advances in telecommunications, would result in increased distance-communication. Indirect communication would be preferred for well-structured information for routine, preprogrammed and decision processes.

Designing and developing your own website can be very time consuming. That is why careful planning and organization are a must. Using the same basic principles, every small business owner can design his or her own website. With a little patience and some general knowledge, you can be up on the web in no time.

Step-by-step guide to website development

1.	Gather information: the most important part of designing your website is the information you wish to convey to your audience. You need to understand the purpose of your site. Is it to sell a product, inform your audience, or offer a service?

You also need to set goals. Think about what you want to accomplish with your website. Common goals are either to generate more sales or share valuable information.

Knowing your target audience is key to building traffic. Imagine the ideal person you want to visitor your website. If you run a business that trains dogs, your target audience would be pet owners. Consider every demographic when you think about whom you are trying to reach.

Content is king when it comes to search engines. Your content must be highly informative, relevant, and fresh. Adding new content often will keep the web spiders actively searching your site. This boosts your rankings and allows clients to more readily find you.

2.	Plan your site: using the information you gathered to put together your website. Your landing page should offer information about your products and services as well as contact information.

Make sure to include a site map that inner links all pages. You don’t want a visitor to wind up at a dead end. They will leave your site frustrated and probably won’t come back.

Plan your site from your customer’s perspective. What will they be searching for? What type of information do they need? Proper navigation will help your visitors find their information quickly and leaved pleased.

3.	Design your website: when designing your site, you must consider your target audience. You want a layout and theme that appeals to the people you is trying to reach. Many programs, like Adobe Dreamweaver, offer an extensive variety of WYSIWYG themes. This type of software is easy to use and requires little knowledge of HTML code.

You may wish to recruit a web designer to help you set up your site. He or she will work with you to ensure your site have the look and feel you want. Your web designer will also link your site properly and add in necessary content to draw in your audience.

4. Test your site: once you develop your site, it’s time to test it by going live on the web. Your site does not need to be complete in order to go live. Just make sure none of your links are broken. If you have a page under construction, let your visitor know it’s being worked on. Make sure your under construction pages have links back to your landing page.

U.S. energy and technology businesses seeking new global markets should prepare to take advantage of new opportunities in Russia. A fresh start in U.S.-Russian political relations is dramatically improving the business climate. Russian economic reforms and the stabilization of the Russian economy has reduced the risk of doing business in Russia. Another factor is that Russia has become a nation of significant wealth because of oil and gas exports. Most importantly, Russia is about to invest in major new energy infrastructure that is a great opportunity for U.S energy and technology business.

A Fresh Start in US-Russian Relations
President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev issued a statement on March 31, 2009 about building the bond between Russia and the United States. President Medvedev made a strong statement about the need need for more investment projects, joint research and development by companies and increased trade in high tech products between America and Russia. President Obama has made clear that he is also interested in strengthening the bonds and trade between Russia and the United States.

President Medvedev and President Barack Obama met in London on April 1, 2009. A Joint Statement by President Obama and President Medvedev on April 1, 2009 stated that they had discussed ways to strengthen the international monetary and financial system and promote global economic stability and prosperity. The statement also emphasized the steps that both countries will take to improve international security, rule of law, and peaceful resolution of differences. This establishes a very good climate for American-Russia business.

Russian Economic Reforms
Key economic reforms have been implemented in the Russian tax, banking, labor and land codes. Russia has passed a new Foreign Investment Law that defines procedures for participation of foreign investors in the capital of Russian strategic sector companies. This new law will create a transparent and predictable business climate for foreign investors. Another significant measure to improve the business climate is that the Russian tariff rate has been set at zero % for the import of some types of technological equipment.

Past problems of doing business in Russia have been reduced for two significant reasons, according to the U.S. State Department. First, Russia has been preparing to join the World Trade Organization by bringing regulations and laws into compliance with internationally accepted business practices. America and Russia concluded a bilateral WTO accession agreement in late 2006. The second factor that has facilitated business transactions in Russia is the growth of small and medium sized businesses. As with most countries, businesses that are small and medium sized are often more innovative and less bureaucratic than big corporations.

Stability of Russian Economy
The Russian economy has greatly improved since the difficult times in the 1990s during the transition to a free market system. Inflation and exchange rates have stabilized due to good fiscal policy, according to the U.S. State Department. In the past nine years, the Russian GDP growth has averaged 7%. Since 2003, Russia has had a budget surplus and has established a large stabilization/rainy day fund ($156 billion in 2007). This kind of economic stability is very inviting for international business.

Russian Oil Exports
Russia is becoming a wealthy nation because of oil and gas exports, which have become the engine that drives the Russian economy. Russia is the world’s largest energy exporter now. Although America is the world’s largest importer of energy, only about 3% of US oil imports were from Russia in February 2009. With improved US-Russian relations, there is a more opportunity an increase in oil exports from Russia to America. The US government has been striving to reduce its dependence on the Middle East for oil and importing oil from Russia would support that goal.

U.S. businesses that want to import Russian oil can look online for Russian partners. The Russian firm OOOLIGA, founded In 2004, has an online ad stating that the company is agent of Gasprom, Rosfneft, Lukoil and other oil companies in Russia. OOLIGA sells rebco (Russian Export Blend Crude Oil), d-2, mazut, as well as numerous other products. Another Russian company is Sakhalin Energy, which promises to deliver oil and gas “profitably and in environmentally and socially responsible ways.” Sakhalin Energy sells d-2, mazut, rebco, lng, jetfuel, lpg, gasoline, m-100, and diesel oil. The Oao Yandgaz Group is another Russian company that is selling oil internationally. Oao Yandgaz states in its an ad that it is a major oil extracting Company that is looking build “strong and long-term business relationships with buyers of petroleum products in accordance with Russian law.” The Oaa Yandgaz Group sells base oil, bitumen, diesel, jet fuel, lng, lpg, mazut100, rebco, other petroleum products. These are just a few examples of the many Russian companies looking for business partners.

Energy Efficiency and Clean Energy Technologies
In the April 1, 2009 Joint Statement, President Obama and President Medvedev pledged to cooperate in improving energy efficiency and development of clean energy technologies. This cooperation will be based on the Global Energy Security Principles adopted at the G-8 Summit held in 2006 in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Russia’s 2008 plan for implementing the St. Petersburg principles shows Russia’s commitment to expand electrical generation and distribution facilities in the next 10 years. They plan to double the total capacity of nuclear power plants and coal-fired plants. Hydroelectric power plant capacity will increase by 60% and gas generation plant capacity will increase by 40%. These massive infrastructure projects will be opportunities for American energy businesses. The projects will also be opportunities for U.S. companies that specialize in technology and products for energy efficiency and clean energy technology.

U.S.-Russian Energy and Technology Trade
These new developments in the Russian marketplace represent huge opportunities for American energy and technology businesses. Russia’s new wealth and economic stability provide an excellent environment for investment and trade. Russia has opened the doors for foreign technology businesses with new laws and zero tariff programs. Russia’s plan to make big investments in energy infrastructure will be significant opportunities for U.S. energy companies. All of these signs are extremely promising, and U.S. companies should be ready to take advantage of these opportunities.

Have you ever thought of challenges that may arise in managing a full fledged team of professionals who are located thousands of miles away from your official location? The problem of skillfully managing an official team of your company is quite an uphill task and can give rise to numerous problems. This problem is very frequent in software companies wherein numerous branches of a particular company have to set up in different countries. It’s a sought of challenge for the country manager responsible for managing the off-shore web development teams.

Off-shore software development panels are being increasingly brought into routine practice by numerous software corporations as the so-called global village has potentially enhanced the cut-throat competition by commercially exploiting the trouble-free swap of economical and first-class technological expertise round the globe. But as a common perception prevails every good thing has a side effect also, so the off-shore development assignments are no different from the league.

Most importantly, the highly skilled issues of developing software programs are being outsourced to offshore employees by most of the IT giants. But if we look at the negative side, the companies also might have to deal with hostile response from the authorities and functional glitches such as preserving executive control and also the working atmosphere within the company.

Difficulties involved in outsourcing a software project to an off-shore firm and sometimes lack of communication between both the parties have resulted in large scale snapping of business relations because generally clients’ are not fully satisfied with the performance of the offshore retailer who occasionally fail to reap in anticipated profit. Sometimes, due to the shortage of local expertise develops which also results in loss of business. Here, the role of Human Resource department becomes more important for the reason that they are responsible for the recruitment of an able candidate for a particular job. The remuneration issue must be settled on the basis of mutual negotiations because after a short while it can become a major cause of attrition.

Numerous software companies who control or influence IT structure and solutions look forward to all their project members to involve themselves enthusiastically in the projects. Many companies also expect their group members, especially the off-shore teams to keenly take part in an online discussion or in specific terms participation in online communities. But the participation comes with an added responsibility such as never to put any sought of personal data of your client in an open community, codes which are necessary to be posted must be enclosed with a password and in any case if you have some reservations regarding an online post always seek advice from the company’ legal experts.

There needs to be a proper co-ordination amongst the team members as lack of it can result in failure to achieve the target, decline in faith, wastage of billion amounts of money and mutual support in professional associations. The job of managing off-shore projects becomes more demanding owing to some of the customary parameters involved.

In the late 1990′s technology soared. It was the era of the dot.com boom and subsequent bust. Many new software and hardware advances were adopted by large companies that began to integrate new technologies into their business processes.

Some of these technologies were on the ‘bleeding edge’ with buggy software, crashes, insufficient memory and so on. Online ‘cloud’ or web based applications were often not reliable and not user friendly.

For smaller companies without IT departments, being on the technology bleeding edge was the equivalent to living a nightmare.

Around 2003 the applications became more robust and bugs and crashes were less of a problem. Part of this progress was due to the dramatic drop in pricing for computer memory meaning that more robust programs could be run without crashing.

Also around this time many industries developed industry specific software to run businesses like car dealerships or bookstores. Called “management systems” this genre of software allowed smaller companies to combine all their processes under one program. This management software also did not require an onsite IT department to keep it running.

This vertical industry specific software was complemented by horizontal industry software such as bookkeeping and contact management software. This meant that a company could also run its books and keep track of prospects and customers in ways they were not able to do before.

Software and platform integrators stayed busy. The big drive during this period was to try to link and integrate software. For instance, management software would generate an invoice, note that it was paid and then route the data to the proper category in the general ledger through a linked accounting system.

It was clearly understood that the more integrated and “seamless” a software was, the more powerful and cost effective it could be. And since human error continued to be a major drawback to software applications, greater integration meant not only saving time and money but reducing errors.

As hardware and software improved it also became cheaper and more affordable to smaller companies. By 2005 and 2006 many of these applications became more mainstream and were used by smaller and smaller companies.

Perhaps the biggest advances during this time were web based applications. Companies could link all parts of their business online from sales and inventory to employee communications and human resources.

This shift also reduced costs from thousands of dollars for a software purchase to a monthly user’s fee making it much more affordable. These applications also eliminated a lot of paper.

By 2007 the second wave of technology upheaval had begun as smaller and smaller companies began using technology to manage and market.

Smaller companies began to sell more online and funnel new prospects to their sales department. These new technologies allowed companies to sell more by expanding their markets.

“In today’s marketplace if a retail or service business does not exploit all their potential markets then their competitors will,” says Eric Ressler of Zuniweb Creative Services, “it’s just not optional anymore.”

Across horizontal and vertical industries the key driver is strategy. Those companies with a solid strategy that is well executed are stronger competitors.

Technology is a critical component in almost all business strategies and in recent years technology has enabled businesses of all types to leverage their strengths in their respective markets.

As technology has become more user friendly it also has more users. Today one does not have to know html or coding to operate very sophisticated software and companies do not require a high level of technical expertise to run most software.

The big advantage is that the user can focus on business functions and not on user unfriendly software.

With these innovations has come a second wave revolution that is changing the way business operates today. As always, the issue is which companies take advantage of these opportunities and which do not.

As always the marketplace will ultimately decide which of these companies succeed.

Prototyping is one of the most important aspects of our development process. We consider the act of prototyping to be a risk mitigation strategy. If approached correctly, we believe that prototyping can reduce the risks in Web application development. In addition, by reducing risks we are often able to reduce project costs.

Prototyping may be done in a number of ways and it may actually employ more than one method over the course of development.

We may begin with hand drawn diagrams and flowcharts to represent User Interface (UI) elements and business processes. These drawings are then converted into HTML-based prototypes of the UI that incorporate a minimal level of functionality.

Customer acceptance tests are then prepared to document the required functionality. These tests are then validated against the prototype, as well as the established business, user and system requirements to ensure that the final system meets the stated goals of the project.

We emphasize to clients that testing should begin early and should be carried out continuously. Testing begins during requirements analysis and prototyping when project managers work with the customer to develop high-level Customer Acceptance Tests that validate the business, user, and system requirements.

During development, unit tests ensure that individual, functional packages of code at the lowest levels do what they are designed to do. Integration testing ensures that all the parts (i.e. functional packages of code) that make up a system function together to meet the specified requirement.

Final Acceptance Testing validates the completed system against the requirements as defined during the requirements analysis and prototyping phase. When all of the final acceptance tests have passed, the system should be ready for production.

Small releases provide positive results to clients in a timely manner, adding value to their business processes as quickly as possible.

Small releases also prevent the project from straying too far from the intended goals before the direction can be corrected. In this regard smaller releases can be considered a risk mitigation strategy as well. The key to a small release approach is to identify the individual subsystems that make up the larger system and rank those subsystems by importance. The most important pieces are then delivered first to add value quickly.

Pair programming is the most difficult to implement of all the development processes identified in this article. While we do not advocate pair programming in all instances, we do feel that there is great value to be gained in many cases. Clients are generally concerned about the development costs of a system. And while the idea of having two developers working side-by-side on the same piece of code may seem counterintuitive, cost savings can be achieved due to shorter testing cycles and less rework as a result of pair programming.

At the same time, managers see the use of two people on one task to be a waste of valuable resources, which can be true if the task is not of sufficient complexity. However, in those situations where it fits, if quality is increased and testing and rework reduced, then we believe the trade-offs are warranted.

The concept of combining Asynchronous JavaScript with XML to fulfill the purpose of development of highly interactive web applications is called AJAX. Credible examples of the popularity of this technology would be Google maps and A9 which have been implemented in Ajax and have raised the bar of user satisfaction due to a rich client end interactive experience. Asynchronous JavaScript and XML have individually existed for quite some time now but it is the ingenious amalgamation of these two stable technologies that has opened the floodgates for innovative offshore app development to thrive.

The Ajax-style Web App Development is characterized by several prominent features. Asynchronous requests are made to the web server which means that even when awaiting a response from the web server the browser user interface is not blocked. It can continue interaction with the user. The Ajax-style applications have a high dependence on browser-based logic written in JavaScript which is due to the recent enhancements and standardization of the DOM model that entails support for dynamic client-side user interface updates. The XML HTTP object native to the XML language allows communication with the web server without page reload thus making the exchange of data not useful presentation between the browser and the web server. The offshore web development and offshore software development arenas have benefited from this innovative technology and its advantages over traditional Web Application Development such as the absence of the generation of an HTTP request to the server every time a user interaction happens. The obvious pluses associated with the option of Ajax Web App Development are a richer user web experience, avoidance of re-rendering UI widgets each time and improved overall system latency due to reduction in role of server providing logic.

Large business managers and proprietors know that technology is a critical piece of nearly every facet of their day-to-day operation, especially in today’s world. They know the significance of buying the best tools for the job, which means counting on only professional business-grade technology. Unfortunately, a lot of small business managers and owners simply haven’t been taught about the importance of buying quality business-grade technology instead of their lesser consumer-grade counterparts. If you’re a small business person and don’t know the differences, and why you should care about the differences, you need to continue reading.

This article is a list of the 5 reasons why buying business-grade technology for your small business is a smart move. With this information, you can make informed decisions when it comes time to choose technology products for your small business.

1. Counting on consumer-grade products will inevitably cost you more money and time

Example: The all-plastic construction of consumer-grade laptop computers helps to keep the costs down, but at the expense of durability. When (not if) a consumer product fails, it will cost you valuable time and money to send the item in for repair, to buy replacement parts and try to fix it yourself, and to spend hours on the telephone with often ineffectual tech support departments.

2. Professional business-grade products will cost you a bit more upfront, but you’ll recover the difference on the back end

Business-grade products tend to be more costly because they are built with better quality components that meet higher tolerances, meaning they can handle the day-to-day strain of a hard-working business environment.

Example: The features of an HP EliteBook laptop for business include a very light magnesium alloy and aluminum case, steel hinges, a display that is secured at four points, a shock-mounted and accelerometer-protected hard drive, a liquid resistant keyboard, and a scratch resistant finish. There is no consumer equivalent on the market.

The bottom line is that business-grade equipment will last longer and require less maintenance throughout its life.

3. Business-grade technology means business-grade support

Business-grade hardware and software manufacturers provide a much higher level of support if a problem arises. Their technical support departments know that their equipment is extremely important for your business, and, in many cases, they are accessible 24/7 to help get you back to work.

4. You get a much longer, and generally more comprehensive, warranty

Business-grade technology usually comes with at least a 3-year factory warranty. What that really means to you is that the vendors are confident that their products will function without any issues for a minimum of 3-years.

Small business PC vendors such as HP and Lenovo also provide “Next-Day, On-Site” warranty support for their products, meaning a local technician will come directly to your office to address a problem the very next business day. Most consumer technology is warranted for only one year, which is about the longest the vendor expects the product to last before failing and needing repair.

5. You get features, features, features

Example 1 – A TalkSwitch phone system for small businesses is nearly limitlessly customizable. It offers many high-level features such as automated attendants that send calls to your workers in their office, or their home, or to their cell phone; and the system will send voicemail recordings in an e-mail to individual employees or to entire departments, just to name a few abilities.

Example 2 – A business-grade network router will give you the ability to use a virtual private network (VPN) to securely access data in your office from anywhere in the world. There are no consumer-grade equivalents.

Conclusion

The truth is that you can’t afford to skimp on the quality and features of your office technology, because your livelihood depends on it. When our clients are contemplating small business technology solutions to purchase, we tell them this: “If you can’t afford to do it right, wait until you can afford it”.
